It has recently emerged that banks and insurance companies could be liable to pay over 4bn to customers who were fooled into paying for Payment Protection Insurance on a loan, mortgage or credit. A previous estimate of up to 1.2bn only covered customers who will attempt to reclaim the payments they have made but this new figure takes into consideration the extra amount of customers who the banks will be forced to give refunds to.

A huge number of overpriced policies were sold to customers who had no hope of claiming if they needed to. Policies were sold to pensioners, the self-employed and those with long term medical conditions who, by definition, were ineligible for cover.

An approximation by the FSA shows that insurance brokers may have to pay up to 450m with the rest being paid by a variety of PPI suppliers such as banks. The average amount repayable to those who purchased policies is 2000 which is a significant amount and has sparked large consumer interest.

A number of high street banks have already been fined as the FSA attempts to make examples of them as well as forcing them to offer refunds to all of the eligible customers. High street insurance broker ‘The Swinton Group’ have been fined 770,000 for serious failings and were made to offer a full refund to over 350,000 customers while Alliance & Leicester have been fined 7m.

Financial giants are strongly opposing the plans to regulate and control the future sale of policies. The FSA aims to stop companies putting pressure on customers to buy ineffective policies. Adam Phillips of the Financial Services Consumer Panel, says “for too long banks have regarded PPI as an easy product to sell and make money without considering whether it is really right for the customer”

Scrum development or project management is a staged framework to be used as part of agile project management, which can increase efficiency and productivity in a wide range of industries and projects. It has become a popular way of working and many of us have or are considering adopting it into our own project management. But are you really ready for scrum methodologies?

The majority of us have seen our bosses, friends or colleagues jump readily on to the scrum bandwagon, attracted by its simplicity without fully understanding whether or not they are ready to adopt it.

They are tempted by short work cycles which produce functional software and the suggested ability to control and produce cycles of work simply by having daily meetings, and who wouldn’t be?

So, the Scrum master is in place, all those involved are fully paid up members of the Scrum fan club and everyone understands how it will work and the project begins with everyone feeling positive that all will go smoothly.

But needless to say, this is not always the case. What many of those adopting Scrum don’t always see it that the software engineering needs to be as ready for Scrum as the humans involved. Otherwise after a few really successful sprints using Scrum, you will often hit a wall, where your productivity dips meaning software release dates are missed and customers get angry. This is when you decided that actually Scrum isn’t that great after all.

But really Scrum methodology isn’t at fault, but the fact that technical practices like Continuous Integration have not been considered alongside it. Without these Scrum facilitates faster working, but may lead to a dip in quality. So the actual problem here is that Scrum alone doesn’t address the engineering of software and so if you don’t use it combined with technical methods the project is likely to run into difficulty.

So the fact of the matter is, however well you adopt Scrum, it is irrelevant if the engineering of your software is not up to fulfilling the projects needs.

Innovative and unlike any other, smart cars are still demanding our attention and proving that despite being small they can keep up with the bigger brands in terms of what they offer us the consumer.

The Innovative Smart cars compact and distinguished appearance is still turning heads and generating interest. Since its arrival on the city car scene it has demonstrated the need for small eco vehicles, influencing the manufacture of Toyota’s  IQ and the Fiat 500.

Smarts value from the very start has been to get the best out of motoring while making minimal impact on the environment. (And of course, having fun while doing it.) It is no doubt then that the Smart journey has ended up down this road!

Smarts brand mission from the beginning has been to get the best out of motoring while making minimal impact on the environment. (And of course, having fun while doing it.) It was only a matter of  time until their dream became a reality.

Like your favourite everyday appliances, phones, laptops, the Smart Electric Drive will need a hearty charge of 8 hours, so probably over night ideally, it will then drive for up to 84 miles before it needs hooking up to the mains again. So where’s the plug ?  Tucked away under the old petrol cap!

So Smart can tick the good to the environment check list box, now to attend to their other value, having fun. With a full complement of Mercedes-Benz safety we can rest assure that any fun will be safe! The electric motor is nippy – achieving 0-30 in an impressive 5.8 seconds, however the engine is limited to a top speed of 62 mph, slightly disappointing but probably perfect for a city car not intended to do a lot of motor way driving. Its appearance how ever is standard Smart- quirky, playful, attractive. It drives stably but has also been described as reactive!

Since 2007 100 Smart electric drives have been trialed, if all goes well you can look to buy from 2012.

Luckily help is here in the form of a helpfully complied list of tips to successfully guide you through preparing and undertaking a public speech.

Time yourself, do you need to add or extract parts of the speech to ensure that you keep to your time allocation.

3. The main attraction

Confidence in your self is key to great public speaking, remember that people are interested in what you have to say, they have chosen to sit and listen to you, they have faith in you, so be interesting, whitty, informative and stimulating, remember when you smile and the world smiles back.

You might not remember the days when the only choice of coffee was between instant or filter, but if you do then all the coffees on choice these days might be baffling. So here is my rundown of the main ones so anyone who usually sticks to white with one can try something new next time they’re in the coffee shop.

One type which is commonly drank is the latte, which takes it’s name from the Italian word for milk, and is two parts milk one part coffee. It makes a sweet and comforting drink and is usually served in a long glass or cup and is delicious with biscotti.

Another quite milky offering is the mocha, one of the most popular coffees around. Mochas consist of a similar ratio between coffee and milk as a latte, but with the added addition of chocolate to create a really sweet treat.

Completely different to the mocha and latte is the espresso, which is short, dark and bitter. An espresso is served in a short measure and is created from beans which have been roasted until dark brown.

Somewhere between the espresso and the latte lies the Macchiato, with literally translates as marked has this name as it is essentially an espresso marked or stained with a hint of milk, making it a less intense coffee hit than with an espresso.

Another variation on the espresso is the Americano, which first came to prominence during World War 2, as this was what the American soldiers drank. An Americano is basically an espresso combined with hot water, in order to give the strength of a regular coffee but with a different taste.

And finally, the most popular on my list, is cappuccino. Cappuccinos are made by combining equal measures of hot coffee and hot milk, finishing with frothed milk and a delicious sprinkling of chocolate powder.

Radiology is the medical procedure of using radiation for a variety of ‘imaging’ purposes. This includes X-rays, Radiant dye, ultrasound and MRIs. These procedures create an image of the inner configuration of an object, in this case, the human body with the use of radiant energy.

In the medical field the science of radiology is a specialization, it takes great understanding and skill to operate radiology equipment and analyse the results. A radiologist is able to interpret results to determine the location, type and seriousness of a vast quantity of medical issues.

This practice is used to give precise understanding of any medical complaints even if a doctor has examined a patient. The methods can identify issues ranging from broken bones to tumours and other medial abnormalities.

The Majority of medical facilities make use of a radiologist for on site support in consulting on a diagnosis and facilities which do not have these skills at their disposal are required to send images for outside analysis and wait on the results.

A radiologist has a duty to obtain the finest possible images and review them expertly as radiology plays a key role in diagnosing a patient. A blunder at this stage could lead to misdiagnosis of a patients conditions or overlooking something serious.

Diagnosis of traumatic cases usually involves a radiologist at some stage so a patient is often in pain or suffering from illness when they are examined. As a result a radiologist must have excellent interpersonal skills and an outstanding bedside manner.

When a radiologist explains their procedures to a patient the often need to keep them calm and comfort them as they may be in distress and the environment may seem daunting to them. A radiologist also needs to consider the medical history of a patient and identify any abnormality that could affect the analysis of the results.

The use of radiant energy in medical procedures is often limited due to the risks involved with prolonged exposure to radiation. A radiologist needs to be able to create consistently accurate results as to avoid unnecessary repeating of procedures.

If you are looking for a job in healthcare, then consider Nuffield Health for a list of Radiology Jobs in your area.

London is one of the biggest capitals in the world and touring it in one day might seem ridiculous but with an early start and a good pair of legs it can be done. Obviously you can’t see everything London has to offer in one day but to be honest you cant do that in a year either, but if you want to catch all the major cultural sights there is a way.

First on you list should be Westminster Abbey, if you can get there for 9.30 you will beat the rush and be able to walk round in peace. The Abbey is a shrine of the nation and most of the countries Kings and Queens have been crowned there and many buried there as well.

Since the 11th century, the Houses of Parliament have been home to the country’s government and are a truly remarkable landmark that has seen Britain through centuries of colonising, war and prosperity. The building is watched over by ‘Big Ben’, the worlds most famous timepiece, why not set your watch to it.

Continuing along the political route you can walk down the road to Downing Street, unfortunately you can no longer walk down it but if you’re lucky you may see someone important getting past the hoards of policemen and security officials. Other than that its hardly palatial but at least you can say you were there.

If you continue north you will reach the hub of London, Trafalgar Square. Home to Nelson’s tower it is the scene to many a demonstration. Once plagued by pigeons, each year thousands of party goers descend on this square to ring in the New Year’s Eve.

From the square you can enter the National Gallery, home to the masterpieces of Da Vinci, Van Gogh and Rembrandt to name a few. Panoramic galleries span eight centuries of some of the world’s most famous art and devoting anything less than an hour to this would be a crime.

Just north of Trafalgar square is Covent Garden. England’s most historic market it was designed by Inigo Jones in 1633 and home to a variety of stalls and talented street performers.

By now you may be getting a bit peckish so why not step into Covent Garden’s very own ‘Porters English Restaurant’ where you can enjoy real traditional English pub food. Owned and run by the Earl of Bradford it’s an ideal stop off for your busy day.

A quick ride on the tube, which is a must in its self, will get you to Charing Cross Station, from here you can take a short stroll to Buckingham Palace. This place doesn’t really need any explanation and depending on the time of year you may be able to go inside but beware that this will involve queuing and will take a lot of time out of your day. If you get the timing right you may be able to catch the changing of the guards but don’t plan your day around it as there is plenty more to see.

One final tube trip will take you to the Tower of London, over 900 years it has been a palace, a royal mint and most notoriously a prison. Many famous Englishmen have lost their heads there and it’s the national home to blood and gore. An hour long guided tour by one of the famous Beefeaters is well worth the while and will bring the tower to life.

As your legs begin to weaken, head over to ‘The Salisbury’, a popular Art Nouveau Pub in the heart of the theatre district. You can enjoy a wide range of drinks and some distinctly home cooked pies without breaking the bank.

The best way to spend a night in London would be to take in one of the many shows on offer, you could head for a big West-End musical or to a traditional Shakespeare show at the Globe. You wont be disappointed at either and it would be a great way to relax and take the weight of your feet.

Looking to stay in a Central London Hotel, then stop by Astor Court Hotel for your ideal short London break.

We all love a bit of sun, sand and sea but the weather back home is always miserable, wet weather boosts plant growth so when you get back and unpack your bags you’re greeted with a forest of a lawn.

Sometimes the biggest problem is the mower you use and many cylinder mowers can have rollers which causes problems by flattening the grass before the blades can cut it. Some people remove the roller assembly and control the height of the grass with pressure applied downwards on the handles.
A common mistake is to try and cut the grass too short too quickly, the grass should ideally only be cut by a third of the total length at any one time to avoid weakening and killing the grass. Although it may be tempting to cut it all at once, it is worth being patient. Trimming a small quantity off will also make it easier and mean you don’t have to empty the trimmings every length of the garden.
It is a good idea to keep the grass clippings off the grass to avoid hindering the growth so clearing them is advised. When the grass is cut you need to apply a liquid feed with a watering can to help re-establish and preserve it. The grass may discolour a few days after the first cut and the feed will help counteract this.
Your next step is to inspect the lawn for weeds, if there isn’t many it’s fine to use a weed stick to kill them but if there are lots all around the lawn a weed killing spray can be the best method. This is a good practice to keep throughout the year but especially after mowing the lawn for the first time in a while.
If bare patches have developed on your lawn it may be worth reseeding it using some form of rapid lawn seed to get it to match the rest of the grass.

Emergency locksmith services are one of those things that most people rarely think about, yet when you need one, you need a good one fast. There are many reasons when a person might need a locksmith in an emergency, for home, business, or car.

Getting locked out of a home or small business can happen at any time. It can be all too easy to step outside the door, forgetting to unlock it. In this situation, you have some choices: you can break a window, and climb through, like a thief, leaving yourself in need of emergency window repair; or, you can call a locksmith.

The same is true of losing your car keys, which can easily happen after a night of fun out on the town. In this case, a professional locksmith can come to you, 24 hours a day, letting you back into your car without damaging the locks, scratching the windows with hangers, or breaking anything, as you might do trying to jimmy open the door on your own.

There are also more serious times when you might find yourself needing an emergency locksmith service in a hurry. For example, if your home is broken into, if your purse (or partners purse) is lost, with the keys and identification inside, or if you get into a serious disagreement with someone to whom you have previously given a key. In these instances, you should immediately call an experienced, licensed locksmith, and have your locks rekeyed. While you are at it, ask the locksmith to key the entire house to a single key; this will make life easier in the future, using the same key to enter the front or back door, and even the garage, perhaps keying it the same as your cottage, for added convenience.

A surprising 30% of Liberal Democrat voters admitted t owning a sex toy, over 10% more than voters of the Labour and Tory parties according to a recent poll matching sexual preferences with political ones. The Lib-Dems also turned out to be the most sexually experienced with the lowest average age of losing virginity and some respondents admitting to their first sexual experience being as young as 13 or 14.

The kinky Lib-Dems also admitted to having the highest rate of sexual experimentation when claiming to be heterosexual, a huge contrast to the conservatives and it was labour that was most likely to have sex on a first date.

However if you want to get down to business it was the Labour women that would be screaming your name, 40% of female Labour voters said they always have an orgasm during sex and 52% of Brown’s followers said they watch Porn.

It seems the Conservatives are still angling after the Thatcher years with a 27% preference to ‘woman-on-top’ sex whilst labour voters were split three ways (cough) with an equal preference for ‘missionary’, ‘woman-on-top’ and ‘doggy style’.

Possibly an unsurprising statistic showed that 65% of Liberal Democrat voting women watched Sex in the City which may be where they get all the ideas from! However the Tories had the largest percentage of men who had paid for sex with Labour and the Lib-Dems close behind.

The results came from the ‘Stella Sex Survey’ conducted exclusively for Stella by YouGov in January 2010 and were taken from 1834 British respondents aged 18+ via an online survey.
